Call for Proposals

SECOND ANNUAL

BLACK WOMEN IN THE ACADEMY

Supporting the Advancement of Africana Women in Academia

Theme:  “No one story tells our story”

October 13 & 14, 2016

James Madison University

Timeframe:  The Call for Proposals is open until September 9, 2016

Purpose:  This conference focuses on identifying and seeking solutions to issues facing women of African descent in higher education.  This year’s theme is inspired by the work of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who reminds us of the danger of a single story. For Africana women in higher education, no single story tells our journey. Reducing our story to a single narrative limits the fullness of our realities.  The conference seeks to represent our diversity and uniqueness, our strengths and our challenges across higher education inclusive of community colleges, predominately white institutions and historically black colleges and universities.  The conference welcomes staff, faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students.   We are all engaged in making it possible for more of us to achieve our professional dreams.

Proposals are welcome from all program areas, disciplines, and levels covering student services, professional development, assessment, administration, or content expertise. Issues of health, wellness and well-being are also encouraged.  Proposals may be from any configuration including individuals, teams, or panels within an institution or across institutions. Proposals may reflect creative endeavors or expressions, and a wide representation of scholarship.  We ask that all proposals by or about Africana women.

STUDENT POSTER SESSION:  The Student Poster Session is designed to encourage the scholarship and research by or about Africana women.  Posters will be evaluated for their content, professional representation and focus with acknowledgments at the end of the conference. Additional information available on the conference website.

Proposals must be in .doc/.docx format:

  • Contact Information of all presenters: Name, affiliation, address, email address, contact number

  • Title: No more than 12 words

  • Brief Abstract: To be used in the program - no more than 50 words

  • Proposal: Provides support of the abstract.  No more than 500 words.

  • All sessions will be 60-minutes - either presentation or interactive workshop

Proposals should be emailed to brysonbj@jmu.edu with Sisters in the subject line.  An email receipt will be provided. Proposal review will start on August 19, 2016 - with notifications of proposal acceptance to follow.  In an effort to be most inclusive, the final deadline is September 9th but would like to encourage early submissions due to this year’s time frame.
